Every so often, I hear news of some super-food that is supposed to be the answer to all those weight loss and health questions that people ask. However, I’d almost always be disappointed to find out that it is all marketing hype and there is very little substance behind the claims. You can imagine my lack of enthusiasm when I heard about the chia seeds and I was prepared to be disappointed all over again. Much to my chagrin however, I found out that the wonderful chia seeds are every bit as “super” as people claim them to be!
Where Do Chia Seeds Come From?
These seeds come from the Salvia hispanica plants which are close relatives to mint. The seeds look very much like any other seed you can find in that they are the size of tapioca balls and a non-descript green-brown in color. But do not let its unassuming appearance fool you for one minute because these chia seeds pack quite the punch health-wise.
Chia seeds have tons of omega-3 fatty acids that do wonders for the heart. Plus, they also contain fiber which adds bulk to the diet and contributes to that full feeling. What I love most about these seeds is that they are very easy to add to my diet since they can be mixed with smoothies, salads, cereals, etc. This means you can incorporate all the goodness of chia seeds to your diet without any muss and fuss.
Check out some of the benefits of chia seeds below!
- The dietary fiber that is found in chia seeds is not only good for people who are trying to lose weight or suffer from constipation, but it is also very good for people suffering from diabetes.
- Chia seeds have tons of calcium which is good news for folks who have dairy allergies. You can take chia seeds in place of milk and enjoy healthy teeth and strong bones.
- Chia seeds have a stabilizing effect on blood sugar. They fight insulin resistance which has been known to increase belly fat. Not only that—insulin resistance can be bad for overall health.
